Integrating Science and Community to Restore Vermont Woodlands, Wetlands, and Riverscapes

Assess, Adapt, and Restore

HRS/Riverscape Ecology is committed to finding solutions to Vermont’s ecological management challenges.  We combine innovative strategies with hard work to deliver effective and efficient management solutions.  Riverscape works with a wide array of customers, including homeowners, land trusts, as well as municipal and state land managers. Work is performed in accordance with state and NRCS standards.

Riverscape Ecology brings a diverse knowledge base and skill set to the job site which is complemented by our strong working relationships across the Vermont Conservation Community. Give us a call to learn how we can help you meet your land restoration goals.

Non-native/Invasive Plant Control

Invasive plants are impacting many natural communities throughout Vermont and the northeast. Buckthorn, honeysuckle, and barberry are found throughout the Champlain Valley.  Riverscape Ecology will work with land owners/managers to identify restoration objectives, and then develop and execute integrated pest management plans employing a combination of mechanical and chemical protocols. Our treatments are designed to control plants on the ground and reduce the likelihood of re-infestation.

Riverscape Restoration

Riverscapes are stream channels and adjacent floodplains that work in concert to provide a number of important ecosystem services. Throughout the Champlain Valley (and beyond), many channels have been straightened, bermed, and incised - effectively disconnected from their floodplains.  As a result, both aquatic and terrestrial habitats are degraded and water quality suffers. Through process-based restoration, Riverscape Ecology leverages stream processes to undo the damage and restore natural riverscape habitats and functions. All stream restoration work is reviewed and permitted by the VT Department of Environmental Conservation and the US Army Corps of Engineers.

Residential services

In addition to carrying out forest management plans and restoring natural communities, we also work on smaller-scale projects for homeowners, proprietors, and municipalities. We have experience treating and removing poison ivy, Japanese knotweed, and Japanese barberry, among other common nuisance plants. Contact us to find out how we can help you to restore ecosystem services or get rid of plant pests on your property!

Forest Stand Improvement

Vermont may be 70% forested, but not all forest stands are created equal.  Many blocks are young and lack the species biodiversity and structural complexity needed to optimize habitat value and ecosystem services.  Riverscape Ecology implements a range of practices to improve forest functions including even-aged thinning, mast tree release, and plantings (with deer exclusion) to introduce stand diversity and adapt to changing climate conditions.
